I think it's easy to argue for a continuous transition from actual plunder in the sense of obtaining someone else's goods and chattels by force through to a distributed resource extraction setup, also by force. The Pirate Kingdom is coming apart today due to resource extraction cost-of-extraction crossing the commodity price. But it's been built on loot all along.
