I got a B.A. in physics, and didn’t find good jobs with it; then I ended up with a Ph.D. in materials, and, after a post-doc, was unemployed for a while, or doing odd jobs like store security guard, until I found a position at the Patent Office (examining applications in business methods, not materials or improved electron microscopes). There is still something to be said for studying physical science instead of sociology or Gender Studies, but things aren’t guaranteed.
