It really is interesting to read the comment thread to Charlie Stross's post on obesity.  Charlie's post basically amounts to a big "it's complicated" while recognizing the issues which seem to be arising globally.  The comments have a large proportion of "it must be this, everything else is irrelevant" entries, plus varied other knee-jerk reactions (As well as some other very good comments, including a pointer to this rather alarming CDC map): as far as pulling people's chains go, Charlie seems to be doing better with this than he did with the post regarding manned space flight.
