I think the court masque after the Restoration has been clearly shown to be based on French court practice. Those entertainments included ladies and gentlemen as well as professional musicians. Louis XIV himself danced in them in his youth. The shift to a proscenium arch setting took place within the royal court (cf the Royal Theatre at Versailles) before moving onto a public stage, presumably to accommodate the 17th/18th century fascination with the possibilities of "machines". So I guess I believe there was a break in performance practice in England during the Commonwealth but a parallel tradition may have continued to evolve in France.
