We have a number of decent second-level authors, but we haven't yet produced a Joyce, Shakespeare, Milton, Dante, or Virgil, or even a Henry James or an Ariosto.

Our luck could change tomorrow, but the last fifty to sixty years has not been a good period for great or potentially great writers.
