It isn't just language. Christian Cameron tells a story about one of his readers complaining, as of a flaw in the story, that one of his historical novels had four reports of the same battle from four different viewpoints, and that they were different enough that they might be four different battles. I think his response was on the order of "exactly", given that the actual historical sources diverge to the same degree.
