The Red Queen’s Race

I finished an Office Action on the older of my two amended cases earlier this week; then a new amendment showed up. I didn’t write the first action on this one, but inherited it from an examiner who has left the Patent Office. So I’m back to two cases on my Amended docket.

I have been working on my oldest Regular New application, but haven’t finished it so far.

New to me

This is a painting by Édouard Frédéric Wilhelm Richter, who I had never heard of. As well, it's an example of "orientalist" painting, which I had also never heard of. Seems to be depictions of the east (starting at the middle east), as imagined by a painter whose online bio does not mention having ever visited the east.

Some interesting detail work in the expanded version.

The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw

All that stands between Alessa Li and freedom from Hellebore Technical Institute for the Ambitiously Gifted is a single carnage-filled rite of passage, or as the unspeakable teachers call it, dinner.

Nero, Elagabalus, and DJT

I remember something from an article I read many years ago, perhaps a review of a book about the Emperor Nero, quoting or near-quoting from memory: “I can but smile when some excessively earnest historian writes a learned monograph about Caligula’s nationalities policy or Elagabalus’s religious policy. Such men did not have policies; they had the whims of spoiled children, whims which, by the accidents of history, they were able to command the resources of the whole Mediterranean basin to fulfill. Nero was a somewhat more complicated case.”

I wonder whether a certain American politician can be classed as “a somewhat more complicated case.” He does have some policies, even if many of them are bad policies. On the other hand, he also exhibits childish whims and a childish understanding of the world, he frequently contradicts himself, and sometimes his views are those of whichever flunky managed to speak with him most recently, even if he said or tweeted something quite different the previous day, after hearing from a different staffer or cabinet member.

I can imagine an assignment for future schoolboys and schoolgirls: compare and contrast President Trump with the Emperor Elagabalus.

Fundraising for Ukraine

There was an article in Reason about citizen fundraisers outpacing the European Union in arming Ukraine. This was largely in the context of Europe, where, for example, Czechia has been aiding Ukraine substantially, and some of the Slovakian people have joined in, although Slovakia’s current government is Russian-influenced.

I myself have made donations to aid Ukraine through its official arm, Ukraine House, and also through a private organization, Razom for Ukraine . “Razom” is Ukrainian for “together”.

Other people may wish to join in helping Ukraine to defend itself and to cope with the damage done by Russian aggression. I wish to say, though, that today is a federal holiday, so I am not at work now, and also that my suggestion to join aiding Ukraine does not apply to you if you have business before the Patent Office, you are a fellow federal employee, or if it would otherwise be improper for me to solicit contributions from you.

Last night in Fabula Ultima

Rather than use a group of interchangeable mooks, the hostiles had two brutes (one who was accurate, one with multiple attacks), a mage with a couple of decent multi-target attacks, and a mage adept at protective spells. It worked pretty well, esp the part where the healer kept the other NPCS upright. It would have worked even better had she not been prioritizing their boss, who is currently enthralled by an artifact of doom and not much good in a fight.

Hypnopompic original sin

My spouse open a drawer and showed me the apple inside. I could not tell if the apple was real or fake or if it was good or bad.

Local Primary Election

On Tuesday morning, I voted in the Democratic primary. Specifically, I voted for a member of the Arlington County Board who favors relaxed zoning, to allows more housing to be built, and against his challenger, who, as I understand it, wants affordable housing, but opposes letting anything denser be built in single family neighborhoods.

I didn’t know which of the two candidates for Attorney General, or which of the six candidates for Lieutenant Governor, would be best, so I didn’t vote in those parts of the election.
