My reading of the current contretemps is based more towards the incompetent than the malicious. I think the current over class as a whole, especially in the US and the UK, is madly hanging onto the tiger's ears; if they had their way the US would have Jeb Bush and the UK would be remaining in Europe under Cameron.
I know that if I were a politician with ambitions towards leadership or a mid-level mandarin in my mid-thirties or so I'd be scared sh*tless of what was coming down the tracks, because my future would be in jeopardy.
(I do think that you're spot on on the approach taken by, say, the Harperites. But the amount of inept flailing going on is more reminiscent of Mickey Mouse conjuring brooms with buckets then of any deliberated and actually thought-out policies.
