At a bit of an angle to this post by [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll on cursive, the learning thereof (concerning which, I was very glad when I discovered italic writing): what about fraktur?  I can read it (well, within the limits of my German vocabulary)  but I understand that many modern German students and young adults can't.  A whole set of classic works in older printings -- scholarship, literature -- have become illegible.  Is there some point in making (German) children learn fraktur?
