"It would be proper to say a prayer, " said the king.
 

Kell frowned, confused. "To what end?" 

"For his soul, of course." Kell's confusion must have showed. "Don't you have God in your world?"... 

 

In the early 19th Century, no member of the Church of England (and certainly no member of the House of Hanover) would have suggested prayer for the souls of the dead - that would have been considered papist. Furthermore, George IV would probably not have thought of asking about prayer, or discussing religion at all (as he goes on to do). He was a very worldly man.
